Which Way to Head From Salt Lake City, Bountiful, Layton, and Ogden

We serve students from across the Wasatch Front, and every set of directions comes down to one fact: Ogden sits at the northern end of the corridor. Your map app will pick the exact route and give you a live arrival time, which beats any number we could print here.

  • From Salt Lake City: Head north. You will pass through Bountiful and Layton on the way to Ogden.
  • From Bountiful: Head north through Layton and on to Ogden.
  • From Layton: You are on the Ogden side of the corridor, so keep heading north to reach us.
  • From Ogden itself: You are already in the right city. Enter our address and let your phone guide you to Airport Rd.

If you live in Layton or Bountiful and have been searching for a flight school near Layton, Utah, our Layton training page and Bountiful training page cover how training works for students in those cities. If you are in Salt Lake City, our post on why many student pilots choose Ogden over Salt Lake City airports compares your options, and our Salt Lake City training page covers training for your city. Ogden residents have a page too: flight training in Ogden. Whichever city you start from, the visit works the same way, and the phone number at the top of this post reaches the same team.

What to Bring to Your First Visit

You do not need flying experience, and you do not need to study first. Bring a valid photo ID. That is the main item, and here is the full list for a discovery flight.

  • A valid photo ID. Keep it handy so you are not digging through a bag at the door.
  • Closed-toe shoes. Wear shoes that cover your feet.
  • Comfortable clothing. Dress for comfort, since your instructor guides you through everything step by step.
  • Questions. Write them down. Your instructor wants to hear them, whether they are about cost, timeline, or what a certificate path looks like. A discovery flight is the right time to ask how training would fit around your work, school, or family schedule, because the answer shapes everything that comes after.
  • A light stomach. We recommend avoiding a heavy meal before you fly.

You do not need a student pilot certificate to take lessons. The FAA requires one before you fly solo, and your instructor will tell you when that step comes up in your training. If you are wondering about the FAA medical certificate, we can guide you through getting one if you do not already have it.

How Your First Visit Typically Unfolds

A discovery flight takes about an hour, with 30 to 45 minutes in the air. It starts at Hangar 397 with a facility tour and a conversation with your Certified Flight Instructor (CFI). From there you move to a ground briefing, you preflight the airplane together, you fly, and you finish with a debrief about what you did and what comes next.

You are not expected to know anything in advance, because your instructor guides you through each step. For a detailed look at the sequence, our guide to what to expect on your first discovery flight takes you from the tour to the debrief. The Hangar 397 tour shows what the hangar and the airplanes look like in person.
